The Valley

Why A Groot Drakenstein Werf Specifies Differently

This valley sits in the shadow of its own namesake mountains, on the R45 between Simondium and Franschhoek — working wine and fruit farms built around the same whitewashed, gabled werf grammar Boschendal's 1812 manor house made famous. That geometry, not a showroom catalogue, is where a specification here actually starts.

Wing One

Sun & Season

At this latitude the midsummer sun sits almost directly overhead (~79–80°) — a stoep roof or eave already intercepts most of it. Midwinter drops to ~32–33°, low and welcome through north glass. The room that actually suffers is the one facing the werf's open side: the low, late-afternoon summer sun that floods a family stoep every day from December to February.

Wing Two

Wind, Between Two Valleys

Inland, the coastal south-easter measurably fades by Paarl. One valley over, Franschhoek's enclosed horseshoe drains cool mountain air down every evening. Groot Drakenstein sits in the funnel between both — most days behave like Paarl's calmer inland pattern, but on any evening the Groot Drakenstein and Klein Drakenstein ranges can still send air down onto an open stoep.

How We Specify

From Orientation To The Order Sheet

Four questions, in this order, at every free measure in the valley.

01 · Orientation

Which Wall Takes The Afternoon

We start at the werf-facing elevation — the wall that catches the low west sun hardest in summer — and work outward from there.

02 · Wind Side

Calm Days, Evening Exceptions

An open stoep or braai room gets a motorised wind sensor on any exterior product as standard, sized for occasional gusts, not a daily coastal rhythm.

03 · The Wall Itself

Lime-Wash, Reveal, Gable

A deep-set window in a thick lime-washed wall usually favours an inside-mount blind over an external fixing into a gable-end facade.

04 · The Recommendation

What Goes On The Order Sheet

Roller or timber venetian indoors, folding-arm awning or zip screens for the stoep, wind-sensor motorisation wherever the product sits outside.

Questions

Before You Ask

Do you make roman blinds?
No — soft fabric-fold roman blinds aren't part of our range. A smooth blockout roller or a timber venetian does the same light-and-privacy job on a farmhouse window without the folds, and we're happy to show you both at your free measure.
Are your roller shutters security shutters?
No. The roller shutters we fit here are a shading product — sun, glare and light control from outside the glass. A security-rated shutter is a different product, available separately on request; ask your consultant if that's what you actually need.
Can you fit blinds without damaging a heritage-era gable or lime-washed wall?
Usually, yes. Deep-set windows in a thick farmhouse wall are well suited to an inside-mount blind that needs no facade fixing at all. If a product does need an external fixing point on an older gable, we'll flag that plainly at the measure rather than after the fact.
What about the valley's evening wind for an awning or zip screen?
Any exterior product — awning, zip screen or external venetian — gets a motorised wind sensor as standard here, sized for the occasional evening gust off the Groot Drakenstein and Klein Drakenstein ranges rather than a daily coastal wind.
How long from enquiry to fitted blinds?
It depends on the product and the number of windows — your consultant will give you an honest timeline at the written quote stage, once your exact measurements and fabric or slat choices are confirmed.
Do double-storey homestead windows need anything different?
Mostly the access plan, not the product — a second-storey window still gets the same orientation-and-wind read as a ground-floor one. Motorised control is worth considering wherever a window is awkward to reach with a pole or ladder.
